About me and this site

meI get a lot of questions about what I do, so here I will try to answer the most common ones. To make it easier, I have left it in questions & answers style.

When have you started with photography?

I first discovered I like photography when I was 10 years old when my father let me take some shots with his Nikon. It was the time of film, so due to the cost, I couldn’t shoot much. With the introduction of the digital cameras I bought myself a Kodak DC260 (and later on my current Nikon).

What do you like about photography?

It truly relaxes me. You could call it my way of meditating.

It makes me switch off and isolate my mind completely to everything around me, and just focus in search of the next motif: something beautiful, interesting, different, catchy and memorable; and then trying to capture it – that exact moment and feeling – on the camera. I love how it stops the moment and shifts my focus like that.

It makes me look and see the world from the positive side, notice all those beautiful colours, uncommon shapes and unordinary sides of the ordinary things. No where is grey and boring any more: no matter what kind of weather it is or what kind of mood I am in. We live in such a beautiful world, we just need to open our eyes and look around!

That is the greatest lesson that photography has thought me: when you don’t like what you see, just change your viewpoint and you’ll see a whole new world! : )

Do you do it professionally?

No. It’s just a hobby.

I have been encouraged by my friends and relatives to take photography more seriously, not only as a hobby, but I feel reluctant to. Trying that, it has made me lose that meditative affect. For that reason I stopped with that idea (for now). For me photography is just too personal.

Why can’t I see much of your photography work online?

For me the joy in photography is mainly right at that moment when I look through the viewfinder and taking the shot. It is not post-production, exhibition, or even browsing through the photos taken – sometimes I do that after some time (the reason why there are not many – newer – photos on my website). Plus the lack of time.

Why have you started writing about photography competitions?

In 2009 I posted information about two good photography competitions that I had come across and realized that many of you showed interest in them. By publishing some more I’ve often found myself in the dilemma as to whether to actually post it or not: many want photo usage rights just by submitting your photo to them.

I think photographers (especially amateurs) don’t pay attention to this as much as they should and don’t bother to read the small print. For that reason I have decided to try encourage and make it easy at the same time to see the photo usage rights policy of individual competitions and have developed the ‘Photo Usage Rights Ratings‘ system.

Are you paid for that?

No. The content is not advertisement. It is my way of giving back.

What do you do professionally?

Things not related to photography. : )

I feel not everything about my life should be exposed on the internet. At least for now :)
