Loxahatchee River’s Wild & Scenic Photography Competition – Jupiter 2010

3. What should photos be about?

We are looking for personal interpretations of the Loxahatchee River.

One of Florida’s most unique treasures, the Loxahatchee River meanders through freshwater marshes and cypress swamps, down to the brackish estuary, and empties through the Jupiter Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean. Navigating the Loxahatchee River is a journey back in time as you explore untouched freshwater reaches, teeming estuaries and coastal marine environments. The Loxahatchee River was the first of only two National Wild & Scenic Rivers in Florida. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Loxahatchee River’s Wild & Scenic designation, and represents a remarkable milestone in our community’s environmental legacy.”

There are 5 categories:

  • Flora (plants & trees)
  • Fauna (fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, invertebrates, etc)
  • Riverscapes and Still Life (stuff that does not breathe)
  • Human Dimensions (people and wildlife, education and outreach, urban interface challenges)
  • Creative and Clever (humorous or composite/artistically-altered images)

Maximum 2 images per category, maximum 14 images per entry.

  • clarity
  • color
  • contrast
  • composition
  • lighting
  • photographic standards

4. Photo Requirements

AREA WHERE IT CAN BE TAKEN: at Loxahatchee River

AGE OF PHOTO: no limit

IMAGE FORMAT: colour prints, 8″x10″ size, mounted on a white 11″x14″ mat board, no frames

PHOTO EDITING: Acceptable: enhanced by removing stratches or dust, or by making slight alternations that have traditionally been made by filters or in the printing process. Acceptable in Creative and Clever category only: extensively altered by double exposure; assembly from two or more images; removal of obstructions or other significant parts; addition, subtraction, or duplication of elements within the image; or other alternations.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Entrants must submit an electronic version (jpeg format, min 300 dpi), along with the print (on CD).

By submitting your photo(s), you agree to allow The Loxahatchee River District and The River Center to publish the image(s) in the future in any medium. A photo credit will run with the photo.”

Overall winner (Best in Show): prizes donated by local businesses

Category winners: prizes donated by local businesses

People’s Choice of each category: prizes donated by local businesses

Selected winning photographs will be published with photo credit in a 2011 river calendar and be part of a traveling exhibit representing the Loxahatchee River.

Winning entries will be displayed at various places throughout Florida and on the web.”
